Lake Danao, Ormoc, Leyte

Image
April 22, 2006. I'd just hopped on a boat to Ormoc the night before on the wishes of my father. Earth Day, I was swimming in the refreshing waters of a lake, cooled by a mountain breeze, tummy filled by a great lunch of grilled fish cooked right on the raft. Good thing the sun was out, so I didn't feel too chilly when we went boating. My last trip for April. May, here I come... (sorry, Palawan, Malapascua and Southern Cebu photos will have to wait again. their sheer number still overwhelms me =P)

moving stillness

this afternoon, i was on the back of a truck going around town with the last of our tables, fax machines and photocopiers, waving and smiling broadly at whoever would accept the gesture of humanity i offered. only one person smiled back. if you happened to be driving around escario and saw someone with a native hat and green shades waving at you, and you didn't wave back, shame on you. the world would be a happier place if only we waved to people and waved back at strangers. it's 1 a.m. and i'm still at brown cup wi-fi-ing, and though we've finally moved to our new office (where i still claim my status as semi-bum), i have yet to find a new house. walked around again this afternoon looking for a room or apartment for rent. and in the haze of hunger and dehyration, i wondered if i even HAVE to find a place to rent. i could just bring all my stuff to davao, after all, and stay there. haven't even begun packing, and i need to move out by may 3rd. and my crazy father wa...

a break from my self-centered preoccupations to celebrate another victory for freedom and social justice  yahoo! may God enlighten Gloria even more. PP 1017 na lang.... ===================== SC declares Calibrated Preemptive Response unconstitutional First posted 03:06pm (Mla time) April 25, 2006 By Tetch Torres INQ7.net THE SUPREME Court has declared as unconstitutional the Calibrated Preemptive Response (CPR) policy of the government but said that Batas Pambansa 88 or the Public Assembly Act was legal. The CPR bans street rallies without permits and gives the government the authority to deal with protesters accordingly. Section 15 provides that: "Every city and municipality in the country shall within six months after the effectivity of this Act establish or designate at least one suitable ‘freedom park’ or mall in their respective jurisdictions which, ...

Happy B(Earth)Day!

the greenie patch by Jeneen R. Garcia published April 23, 2006   Hello, kids! Do you know that yesterday was Earth Day? No, Earth wasn’t born on April 22 (only God knows when Earth’s real birthday is), but people around the world have agreed to do something extra special for the Earth every year on this day.   Even though Earth Day is over, here are some fun ways you can help the Earth this summer.   Go to the beach and pick up all the garbage you can see, especially plastics, cans, and styro. These kinds of garbage are bad, because fish and turtles accidentally eat them and die. Besides, it’s yucky to swim with all that trash! Just make sure to use gloves or sticks to pick up the garbage so you don’t hurt your hands. Go biking to save energy. Not only is biking a fun way of reducing air pollution from fossil fuels like gasoline and diesel, it also cuts down on the electricity you would use if you stayed indoors. Instead of playing video games all day long, why not fly ...

Who’s Afraid of the GG Gang?

the greenie patch by Jeneen R. Garcia published March 25, 2006     The last time we met here at the greenie patch, we got to know Methane and Nitrous Oxide, two members of the Greenhouse Gas (GG) Gang. They form a blanket around the Earth and do crazy things to our climate--like create super typhoons in summer, or killer heat waves in the rainy season.   So kids, let’s meet the rest of the gang and discover how we can keep them from messing with our climate.   Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) and their relatives, HFCs and PFCs, are GGs made by humans to make refrigerators and airconditioners work. But they are also used in spray paint, air freshener sprays, and the styro containers that our chicken and spaghetti meals come in. When scientists made CFCs, they didn’t know these would become GGs!   So next time you eat fastfood, ask the cashier to put your food on a plate instead of in a styro box. Better yet, eat at places that don’t use styro. If you go shopping for a...

a very long absence: the story of a semi-bum

Image
this is what i’ve been up to in the past month i’ve disappeared from multiply--waking up at sunrise almost every day to catch a ride, or go on a trek, or shoot the landscape; going from mountain to sea and vice versa without thought of tiredness, as if there was no tomorrow (the only thing that got me through when i was at the point of tears from exhaustion and anxiety over deadlines was Isaiah 40:31); talking to strangers and asking them for free housing and food; temporarily adopting semi-stray cats (meaning abandoned by their owners). and yes, getting roses (twice!) from an anonymous donor (--> i've asked the possible culprits but they've all denied. so if you’re in my network, speak now, or forever hold your peace).   all this traveling has a price, though. i’ve grown pimples with a vengeance i haven’t seen since high school. i have bruises and scars from i don’t know which rock on which island. and i’ve gained more than a few pounds and inches from all the extremely yum...
