confession #4 of a certified wi-fi junkie (or How I Spent my Summer Vacation)

i am sitting on a bamboo bench in anilao, batangas, crickets chirping, darkness in the streets... and multiply-ing on an HSDPA connection shared via a wireless LAN connected to four other laptops on the table. at first we tried it with a 3G phone sharing its internet connection (P10/ 30 mins) with a laptop using bluetooth, but then another member of our team arrived and just happened to have this cool plug-and-play gadget that can run up to 3.6 Mbps. and it's on a fixed monthly subscription, so we can surf all we want! the things you can do when you experiment with techie stuff =D

tomorrow, we do our dives, then move to verde island on sunday (the center of the center of marine shorefish biodiversity in the world--google it) for more research dives. on oceanweather.com we learned that there's a typhoon heading our way, so we might be stranded on the island, but who cares when we have internet wherever there's a cellphone signal?

as for the rest of my summer...last week i was in palawan concluding 20 days of living in a boat, diving in tubbataha, cagayancillo, and balabac (near malaysia). for research ;-) God is really great. because just last year, i was trying and trying to get to tubbataha (for free, of course, because paying to get there costs as much as at least two laptops =P), but i only got as far as a backpacking tour of palawan--snorkeling, no diving. and now here i am. and getting paid for it, too! this batangas trip is the third leg of our research in the sulu sea. this summer was my first time diving in luzon =D

i should be lying in my room, enjoying anilao, but some experiences are even better shared. especially when you have cool gadgets to do it with hehe. above- and underwater photos to come once i'm settled....

  3. HUG. definitely doing the science you were born to do.
and a part of me hopes you get stranded on the island, too. =)

will start reporting at roslin on monday, myself.
where i can also wifi to my heart's content.
hopefully, their network allows for NU, chikka and other such necessities in life.

take care and be careful in that big blue yonder.
hopefully you can upload more underwater videos. HINT!!! =)

    HUGS,
    jemi

  5. wow, roslin! there i am sure you you will be the scientist YOU were meant to be (all those exams be damned =P).

yes, yes, yes, i've been taking more video clips wherever i go with you in mind, actually. the problem is i have to convert them first to mpeg since the avi files are so large =( too bad, since the quality's really good as is, and converting the videos compromises the resolution. and then there's the problem of needing a consistently fast internet connection so that the uploading doesn't get interrupted, which often happens and makes me give up.

    any suggestions for alternatives?
