FOR SALE: Professional Raketeer/ Traveling Bum

On April 1, 2006, I will be officially unemployed. Yahoo! I’ve been dreaming about this day for the longest time, when I can truly enjoy my summer as it should be enjoyed. The meteorologists predict La Niña (this is what we get for still emitting all those greenhouse gases =( now the farmers need to change their crops to cope) in the next few months, which is not so bad because I’m most happy when it rains, but not so good for visibility in diving.

But aside from that, I also want to see if I can be more productive working out of the office instead of in. I usually work best and get things done quickly on my own time, in my own physical spaces, because I prefer working on something until it’s done rather than having to divide my time into “day job” and “night job” or “weekend job” as I’m doing now. And could I possibly earn more? Pray more? Help more people? So this is an experiment.

How long will the experiment last? If I don’t get a scholarship for an MS, only until the end of May. After that, I’ll be joining the rest of the world in looking for a real job. If I DO get a scholarship (and please help me pray that I do), it might last until I have to leave for school. In any case, it will be good practice for later when, eventually, I’ll have to spend more time on the things that really matter instead of on having to earn money.

And so, here’s my résumé for the summer. Please pass on to people you know whom you think can use someone like me =)

JOB OBJECTIVE: Professional Raketeer/ Traveling Bum

SPECIFIC OBJECTIVE: Output-based projects that will take a week or less to complete at a time (there’s no point being a traveling bum if I’m spending more hours working than bumming, now, is there?)

WORK EXPERIENCE (since college graduation)

  1. Advocacy Officer in a non-profit, environmental law group (1 year)
  2. Researcher/ Writer/ Editor in a non-profit, environmental law group (3 years)
  3. Executive Assistant in a Canadian-funded watershed management project (6 months)
  4. All-Around Intern in a Canadian-funded watershed management project (1 year)
  5. Freelance writer/ editor/ photographer for newspapers, magazines, and internal publications (6 years)
  6. Volunteer diver/ PR person/ lay-out artist/ singer/ teacher/ facilitator/ usher/ receptionist (5 years)
  7. Collector and Disburser for some family-owned property (1 year--i think)

TOP 10 SKILLS (in no particular order)

  1. Writer – specializing in environment and travel stuff, but willing to try anything new (especially food!); I’ve done research papers, project proposals and reports, ad copy, web content, brochures, speeches, news and feature stories, essays, poetry.... I’ll even do love letters.
  2. Copy editor and Proofreader  – books, manuals, theses, articles...and all of the above
  3. Translator – I’ve done Filipino, Cebuano and English, in varying levels of proficiency...also for all of the above
  4. Illustrator and Designer – comic strips, posters, newsletters, invites, teaching aids...although can’t promise anything grand
  5. Photographer – animals, children, still life, landscapes, interiors and details, portraits, architecture, and yes, nudes
  6. Singer (with bamboo flute, kubing, rain stick, and baby guitar as accessories) – weddings, birthdays, book launchings, or videoke showdowns; whether with a choir, impromptu band, or solo a capella; can sing Jesuit music, bossa nova, Gershwin, Beatles, Barbra, Joey Ayala, and Carole King, to name a few.
  7. Diver – promise me a good dive, and I’ll offer this service for free, whatever your purpose may be (except blowing up reefs, as the navy sometimes does)
  8. Researcher – surveys, key informant interviews, FGDs, biophysical assessments, review of related lit and secondary sources.... I’m especially good at finding out interesting stuff about people (e.g. your crush or exes) through the internet and my six degrees of separation.
  9. Tour planner/ guide – all I can say is, I’m the sort of OC person who derives great joy from fitting in as many things to do in as little time and as low a budget as possible. I also like figuring out how to do things the best possible way.
  10. Yaya – I love entertaining (and being entertained by) animals, babies, and children up to 6 years (anything older that should be able to entertain themselves)

If worse comes to worst, I can also do filing (I love classifying things and setting up systems), dishwashing, serving tables, and being gofer for a worthy cause/ production.

WILLING TO DO (with sufficient training & supervision)

  1. Web design, flash animation, and database construction (but i guess this can’t be short-term, huh?)
  2. Any kind of dancing (except maybe striptease – saw that coming =P)
  3. Modeling (at your own risk HAHA!)
  4. Driving (especially a motorcycle or tricycle, but a plane would be good, too)
  5. Pretty much anything

RATE: Negotiable (i believe in social justice)

I just need to have enough to pay for my travels and my rent and my fare going home (I’m not sure yet where THAT will be). Or maybe even less than that, if it’s for a good cause and there’s free food and free travel (especially to the places on my list) =D i’m not picky about accommodations or transportation

  7. by the way, to all those who messaged, texted, or emailed that they want to join me in one place or another, will keep you posted on the final schedule. i'm still waiting for my contact in palawan to tell me when i can hitch a ride to tubbataha with their research team. after that, i can schedule everything else.
