TSINELAS ASSOCIATION

Description: Maayong adlaw! THOUSANDS of children don't enroll every year for lack of school supplies. How much does one notebook cost these days? P20? A ball pen, P7? For just this amount, a child is denied the right to education. The difference a few pesos make! Who's to blame? The government? The community? The parents? Is finger-pointing the answer, or part of the problem? Why not ask this question instead - what have I done to help? While the government tries bigtime solutions to the problem on education, you can do your share by helping "ismol tym". Give a little of the many that you have and send children to school. If you aim for some angrier approach here, like marching down the street and showing those congressmen the dirty finger, we salute you. But if you think of yourself as just a dot in the universe, you may choose to leave the darker, uglier side of the problem (corruption in government, world debt, general apathy) to Bono and the Pope. The point is, y...

Sinulog Sidelights

Image
After four straight years of walking on the streets, I got tired of taking photos. Besides, they were less friendly to photographers this year and I didn't want to argue so I decided to just enjoy walking and jostling with the crowds. At the end of it all, we just hung out at Bo's in Ramos taking pictures of ourselves =) and I mean we really had a pictorial session. I still don't have the other photos taken by my friends with digital cameras. The photos with the vendors and candles I took at the Sto. Nino Basilica one Sunday on February 13, when I happened to have a meeting downtown. The night shots I took at Fuente Osmena the Friday before Sinulog, on January 14. All shots handheld, the shots from the overpass taken with bulb exposure.

Sign and Save the Amazon Rainforest

Description: Dear All, The Brazilian congress is now voting on a project that will reduce the Amazon forest to 50% of its size. It will take 1 MINUTE to read this, but PLEASE put your names on the list and forward this on as instructed below. First, some facts: the Amazon rainforest is responsible for the generation of 20% of the oxygen that we on this earth breathe, 30% of the world's freshwater is contained within the Amazon basin, 60% of the cancer fighting drugs used today are derived from plants that can only be found within the Amazon rainforest. The area to be deforested is 4 times the size of Portugal and would be mainly used for agriculture and pastures for livestock. All the wood is to be sold to international markets in the form of wood chips, by large multinational companies. The truth is that the soil in the Amazon forest is useless without the forest itself. Its quality is very acidic and the region is prone to constant floods. At this time more than 160,000 squar...

Boto Para sa Inang Bayan

Description: A Signature Campaign to Stop Commercial Logging and Mining in the Country’s Natural Forests The original forest cover of the Philippines has been reduced from 70% in the 1900s to barely 6% as of 1998. We continue to lose our forests at the rate of more than 100,000 hectares per year. Whether through legal or illegal means, the continued destruction of our forests by logging and mining operations threatens the very survival of our people. Our forests provide ecological services and resources that serve as the backbone for rural development, economic growth, and poverty alleviation. As we lose our forests to logging and mining, we are sacrificing the long-term sustainability of our country for immediate financial gain. We call on the Government of the Philippines to IMPLEMENT A NATIONWIDE TOTAL COMMERCIAL LOG BAN AND A NO MINING POLICY IN NATURAL FORESTS. Ingredients: We aim to gather 1 million signatures to send the message that we will not stand for the further destructio...

The Death of Environmentalism

http://www.grist.org/news/maindish/2005/01/13/doe-reprint/ One of the most important things nature teaches us is that everything is connected to everything else . Here's why "environmental" problems--and solutions--are often not environmental at all, but more about people and their need for food, jobs, and a less problematic world to live in.

Watch Out! Might be coming to YOUR hometwon

Description: Notorious Mining Firms in Govt Priority List bY IBON Foundation Posted by Bulatlat Several mining firms that have notorious records in environmental and social damages are among those endorsed by President Arroyo to be accorded with an array of incentives as Investment Priority Projects (IPPs). But independent think-tank IBON Foundation urges the Arroyo government to go after these notorious mining firms and make them accountable for their environmental and social crimes, instead of rewarding them with more incentives. These corporations, whose mineral projects are expected to infuse at least $6 billion in the next six years, will enjoy a longer list of incentives than ordinary mining projects such as 6-year tax holiday and exemption from import duties and corporate taxes, among others. Ingredients: Firms included in the IPP list are: -Marcopper Mining Corporation, owned by Canadian company Placer Dome, which plans to open the San Antonio Copper Project in Sta. Cruz, Marin...

OPEN FOR BUSINESS

Start:      Feb 2, '05 End:      Feb 4, '05 Location:      New World Renaissance Hotel, Makati The GMA Administration is officially selling the country starting today to mining investors from all over the world, many of whom have very questionable track records in other countries in terms of respect for human rights and environmental rehabilitation. On the same day that Typhoon Winnie hit Quezon and the other provinces in Luzon, the Supreme Court somehow reversed their decision on a landmark mining case in Mindanao and declared that 100% foreign-owned companies can now mine our country. GMA and her pet Michael Defensor (DENR Secretary--the irony!) are saying the minerals industry is the key to poverty alleviation in our country. They just conveniently ignored the numbers: from 1990 to 2000, the contribution of mining to the GDP has been no higher than 1% and has been steadily declining. This is because the price of minerals has also been goin...
