Fire Dance at the Full Moon Party




Went on an extended bonding with my housemates (started with shopping till past 11pm at GUAVA last thursday as soon as i arrived from bantayan, then continued with an expedition to Carbon late sunday afternoon for UK2x, DVDs, flowers, and my very own baby guitar--Carbon photos hopefully to be posted soon by Cathy, who brought her lomo along). It was the first time all of us in the house went out together since we moved (at different times) into our boarding house in the last two and a half years.

We scheduled dinner Monday night (October 17) at Handuraw, because I had a free gift certificate (any pizza of our choice). It happened to be the night before Sharon's birthday, so she decided to pay for everything else we ate (chili chips, pizza sticks, three pasta dishes, another pizza...hey, we were hungry from work. ate everything in an hour. or 30 minutes ba, cath? ;-).

There ALSO happened to be a Luna Festival, which is held every full moon, and we had the unexpected treat of watching the performance of fire dancers from Sweden (?) and Davao, whom I had missed last time I went home because of family affairs. Used Sharon's digi cam to take the photos. Truly amazing. You should try to catch them in Boaracay.

    Awesome act! And indoors with fire too! My mother would never allow me to do this at home...(i did burn parts of her garden as a kid).

    hahaha. yes, we were all teary-eyed after, and cathy had to bring out her inhaler becuase she couldnt breathe from the fumes. even more amazing was that the girl didn't burn her hair! part of the act was spinning the fire really close to her body. loi, one of my housemates, said her hair actually caught fire at one point, but she just brushed if off. maybe the beeswax in her dreds serves as protection.

Being Brown... again

In 2002, I wrote an  #essay for one of my Sun.Star columns titled "It Ain't Easy Being Brown" . In March 2016, I suddenly got requests from university students in different parts of the  #Philippines  to interview me about this essay for their class. The essay wasn't online and they had to ask me for a copy, so I have no idea how their teachers thought to assign it as a text. In October 2017, I was contacted by students from yet another school telling me that they had chosen the same essay to make a  #shortfilm  on for a school competition. Again, no idea how they got hold of it. But since my essays are  #autobiographical , it was basically a film based on my life. Sharing it now because it's just so hilarious 😂 especially their portrayal of my parents. It's so amazing what kids can do with the technology these days. It Ain’t Easy Being Brown
