My New Obsession

mwahahaha! now i have a new obsession: HTML. i was browsing through the blogs of some of my contacts' contacts, and i noticed that they were able to change their fonts and even add buttons to their entries! i've always had an idea that with HTML, you can manipulate how anything appears on the web, but this afternoon, as i took advantage of the free Globequest wireless internet in ayala, i decided i should know at least enough HTML to be able to do things in my blog. so here it is--the result of some of my experiments.

i mean, sure, i know i can still do this (and much more) by just formatting my document in Microsoft Frontpage and then copy-pasting the HTML code, but it's fun knowing how it's done from scratch. and now i know how to interpret the basics of this language =) i don't need to blindly copy the source code from websites i like anymore. now i can copy intelligently.

i'm just trying out some of the stuff i've learned so far. unfortunately, i had to cut my tutorial short because i had to leave the mall. can't wait to get back to it. but fortunately i can always do explorations on my own even when i'm offline, just as i'm doing now.

haven't even mastered photoshop yet and already i have a new addiction. i'm such a nerd. it's a long weekend in Cebu too =P shouldn't i be out on a beach somewhere? well, i guess this is something i've been wishing i could learn. i just didn't expect it to happen today, or that i'd be able to do something like this right away. the wonders of technology. even the internet still amazes me. once i stayed up till 2 a.m. excitedly memorizing Microsoft Word keyboard and mouse shortcuts! and there's still XHTML and java and flash and...i don't think i'll be getting decent sleep ever again.

next life-skill-to-learn on my list: driving a motorcycle.

PS i'm posting here again Detective Pawikan, solver of fishkill mysteries, because i seem to have deleted my very first journal entry (on my recent discovery of the wonders and genius of photoshop for coloring my cartoons and fixing the tonal range in dark, blurry photos =)

Being Brown... again

In 2002, I wrote an  #essay for one of my Sun.Star columns titled "It Ain't Easy Being Brown" . In March 2016, I suddenly got requests from university students in different parts of the  #Philippines  to interview me about this essay for their class. The essay wasn't online and they had to ask me for a copy, so I have no idea how their teachers thought to assign it as a text. In October 2017, I was contacted by students from yet another school telling me that they had chosen the same essay to make a  #shortfilm  on for a school competition. Again, no idea how they got hold of it. But since my essays are  #autobiographical , it was basically a film based on my life. Sharing it now because it's just so hilarious 😂 especially their portrayal of my parents. It's so amazing what kids can do with the technology these days. It Ain’t Easy Being Brown

Every time I walk down a grocery’s toiletries section, an overly eager, mestiza sales lady blocks my path, wielding the latest whitening product. It’s as if I had a sign on my forehead saying “In Need of Whitening: Approach at Will”.  It’s weird how even in this age of political correctness and Naomi Campbell, Filipinos still automatically equate beauty with fair, cancer-prone skin. And have you noticed how they use naturally white people like Lucy Torres and aforementioned sales lady to endorse their product, in a strategy to make us brownies insecure?
