Kadayawan sa Dabaw
well, it's almost 4 a.m. and i'm still here online. of course, when i'm home i'm usually online only after 1 a.m., when prepaid internet's cheaper. so sorry, my brain's a little slow at this hour of the night (or day, depending on whether you're a night owl or a moring person) and you won't be getting much out of me about kadayawan. i'll let the pictures tell the story.
unfortunately, i haven't had them developed yet. i used up 5 rolls of film in my 5 hours of walking on the streets under the afternoon sun just to get good shots of the Indak-Indak sa Kadalanan or tribal streetdancing. you have to understand, it's the first time i have a camera in my possession during kadayawan. all those other years after high school i was away at college or at work.
*TRIVIA* believe it or not, i was actually part of our high school contingent once for the streetdancing, dancing all around downtown in the heat in full costume. i don't think our school participated again after that.
because I was at church with my family the next day, I didn't catch the float parade =P and i have yet to go to the floriculture exhibit during the daytime so i can show you some pictures of the orchids Davao is so well-known for.
let me just say that Kadayawan truly is a must-see festival. dancers from all over Mindanao representing their respective tribes participate in the streetdancing. the costumes and dances are really fascinating in their diversity.
and of course, if you love ethnic music (like i do), you'd really love it here during the week-long celebration. music, flowers, fruits--that's the bountiful harvest Davao celebrates in Kadayawan.
the picture i'm attaching here is the plaque i've designed for WILA for our anniversary in september. that's why i'm up so late (or early, depending on blah blah blah...), because i had to email this. my motif is woman, moon and sea. o diba, related =) i drew this using the mouth of the plastic cup i was drinking water from at a cafe late tonight. i simply had to get out of the house to clear my mind and get some space. otherwise, i couldn't have done work on the design, or had any decent thought process at all. that's why home is just for vacations.
anyway, i'm thinking engraving on wood, but then i don't really know how plaques are made. of course, i didn't include the text here. hohum...zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
