Semana Santa, the original Spanish way
10 de abril 2009, viernes santo. Instead of flogging and self-crucifixion, suffering in Spain is defined as going under one of the statues brought out for procession and becoming a human wheel. This video was taken in Cadiz, where I live now. I was just walking home from the beach and decided to go through the old town because it was getting cold, and serendipitously ran into this procession, which I felt preserved the original atmosphere more than the one I saw in Sevilla the day before.
I know, it's already the end of spring, and I should be posting videos of ferias instead. I will. But this was just too weirdly cool not to post ;D
those things are over a ton. incredible isn't it =)
ReplyDeleteyeah, i didn't believe it myself until i saw the thing turn at the street corners in that slow, funny way....and then i saw the feet. how are you, jesus??

ReplyDeleteI'm quite fine, but feeling silly and guilty for not remembering that you are/were in spain while I was! I was there for april and half of may. Even went to the south. *gulp!* I totally missed the fact that you were in spain!
ReplyDeletehi mac! have you been to cadiz?? :) i'm here till end of june, then i move on to my next country.... been trying to see as much of andalucia as i have time and money for, but am really interested to know how different it is from the north. where are you now?
ReplyDeleteit's much creepier actually being there and hearing them pound their steel rods on the cobblestone and seeing their klu klux klan costumes...especially at night. some of them wear them in black and red. but yeah, amazing what the world hides in tucked-away places.
ReplyDeletewill try to post some more of my "documentaries" for you to enjoy ;)
