Forum on Oil Drilling in the Tanon Strait

The Japan Petroleum Exploration (JAPEX) has had its eyes on the nationally protected Tanon Strait, feeding & breeding ground and marine corridor for whales and dolphins, since more than two years ago, when it started initial explorations.

This month JAPEX wants to do actual drilling. The Department of Energy (DOE) is inviting all concerned (that means YOU) to attend the meeting on Wednesday, November 7, at the University of San Carlos in Cebu. Sec. Angelo Reyes and USec Roy Kyamko will be there.

Please don't be late. Surely this is important enough to be punctual for :P

    what is it about the philippine government, with its exceptional talent for breaking its own laws? sigh.

    You know what they say Neen. Money talks.. bullshhh walks.

    It could be worse though... it could be a Chinese drilling company, which have horrendous environmental compliance policies. At least the Japanese are very strict on complying with ecological standards.

    well..don't really know about that. the japaense have a lot of violations, too. but at least their NGOs are active at making them face their social responsibilities. true! better japan than china, i guess. so how did that cybereducation project worth billions of dollars slip past everyone's attention? if not for those bribery issues abouth the ZTE scam, it would've gone totally unnoticed! then we'd be spending for computers and "satellite feeds" of "master teachers" to the poor kids in the mountains who haven't even gotten their budget for electricity or a roof over their classroom. hay naku... wonder what's next on the soap opera that is philippine politics?

Being Brown... again

In 2002, I wrote an  #essay for one of my Sun.Star columns titled "It Ain't Easy Being Brown" . In March 2016, I suddenly got requests from university students in different parts of the  #Philippines  to interview me about this essay for their class. The essay wasn't online and they had to ask me for a copy, so I have no idea how their teachers thought to assign it as a text. In October 2017, I was contacted by students from yet another school telling me that they had chosen the same essay to make a  #shortfilm  on for a school competition. Again, no idea how they got hold of it. But since my essays are  #autobiographical , it was basically a film based on my life. Sharing it now because it's just so hilarious 😂 especially their portrayal of my parents. It's so amazing what kids can do with the technology these days. It Ain’t Easy Being Brown
