Boljoon, Cebu




September 9-10, 2005. Was feeling claustrophobic in the city, so decided to go off on the long weekend by myself to Boljoon, which I've been wanting to visit for the last 5 years (imagine, 5 years worth of frustration =P). Left the house at 5am Friday morning, got on a bus, and took a 2 1/2-hour trip to southeast Cebu. And i'm so glad i went even though i wasn't sure what i'd find. Rented my own cottage by the beach, took as much time as i wanted to write, snorkel (it was beside a marine sanctuary), read poetry by the rocks in the rain (o ha!), wait for the sunrise, sketch, take walks in town, make friends with kids and old-timers, and shoot...in short, everything i want to do but hardly have time and SPACE to. it was wonderful! God is great =) more stories coming in my journal.

PS forgive the (fat) pictures of me mixed up with everything else. when you automate things, it's easiest to just lump everything together. i discovered it's not so bad, after all, to automate the "copyrighting" of my photos using photoshop =)

    lovely photos neen =) i thought "mona waiting for her mother" was my favorite but then i saw more photos i liked so now i can't decide which ones i like best, hehehe.

    nope, no tripod. just used the balcony ledge. and actually, the sea wasn't smooth. i used bulb exposure of a few seconds for this one (the sun hadn't come out yet) so the bright, smooth part is actually the motion of small waves coming in =)

    Hmmmm. I had better re-schedule Boljoon another weekend. (Planning to trek along this Sunday with Argao.) Definitely have to re-sched. Lovely pictures, as always :)

8 and 9 June 2007. When editor Kristin Llerin asked me to write about Boljoon for the Cebu Yearbook, I asked, "Why ME?". Being Brown... again

In 2002, I wrote an  #essay for one of my Sun.Star columns titled "It Ain't Easy Being Brown" . In March 2016, I suddenly got requests from university students in different parts of the  #Philippines  to interview me about this essay for their class. The essay wasn't online and they had to ask me for a copy, so I have no idea how their teachers thought to assign it as a text. In October 2017, I was contacted by students from yet another school telling me that they had chosen the same essay to make a  #shortfilm  on for a school competition. Again, no idea how they got hold of it. But since my essays are  #autobiographical , it was basically a film based on my life. Sharing it now because it's just so hilarious 😂 especially their portrayal of my parents. It's so amazing what kids can do with the technology these days. It Ain’t Easy Being Brown
