the first poem
posting this as requested by cousin sunny, my philo teacher in third year college...
as you can see, this is very raw. i consider this my "first poem" because i wrote it after my first writers' workshop and after writing this (and after people had reacted to it), it suddenly dawned on me that i could write poetry. (sometimes it's really better to start things late in your life). part of that realization was that poetry is so much more than the poet because the poem can contain insights and experiences that the poet him/herself cannot grasp. that's the best thing about art--it's about serving a greater knowledge and wisdom, encompassing all space and time. what comes out of you will just surprise you.

Silence
lives in the rainforests
of the Amazon
Where every drop
of cool rain
Falls
as a thread
of gossamer curtain
Parting
to reveal a mime:
Spiders spinning life-tales
between giant trees;
Big brown ants
readying a rich feast
for their queen.
Silence
walks through this
Aging carpet
of muddy earth and leaves,
through a dark, endless
cavern of translucent green,
covering each breath
with a heavy blanket
of quiet.
Even the earth does not speak
as it claims an old tree
crashing
soundlessly.

Jeneen -
ReplyDeleteThanks for this post! I was looking for this poem for a while, and actually, the image of the tree falling soundlessly in the middle of the rainforest has haunted me since the first time i read it! You're right about the insight with poetry and art in general. That' what Hans Georg Gadamer would say. Art itself is bigger than the artist, and once the artform is finished, the artist practically dies and the artform takes a life of its own and engages every person who encoutners it in a unique and special way.
Thanks again for this poem!
Sun, I'm having a wonderful time viewing the pictures your friend Jeneen here has posted. She calls you cousin Sunny. Is she your real cousin or tawagan nyo lang?
ReplyDeleteHi Auntie Rose! Jeneen is my former student in Ateneo, and she belonged to Heights, the literary organization of the school, and she is a good friend too. The history of the "Cousin Sunny" thing is this: Neva was the editor-in-chief of Heights when I was teaching philosophy there, and so... Neva introduced me to the Heights people, as her cousin. Since then, people referred to me as Cousin Sunny, because I am Neva's Cousin.
ReplyDeleteIf I were Jeneen's real cousin, I would be very, very happy, and proud. =)
